›› What in the heck is a Windows Service anyway?

If you're a complete novice, this question is completely reasonable and a very good place to start. If you have never heard of Windows Services before, there's a perfectly good explanation since you can think of Windows Services as being "invisible programs". Windows Services are "invisible" in that they run invisibly in the background of your computer- they start running as soon as you boot up your computer (unless they are set to disabled or manual) and require no physical launching from the Start menu. They are basically there in the background of your computer all the time whether you know about them or not.
